Get to know us…featuring Gretchen Meyer!

We are thrilled to welcome Gretchen, viva bella’s newest Event Designer!

After 17 years of working with her husband for their Financial Planning Firm, Gretchen decided to stay home with her daughter. When her daughter began school, Gretchen was ready for something new, specifically an outlet for her unique creativity.  Gretchen says “I wasn’t going to jump back into the work force for just any job. It had to be the right one!”  Her warm personality, drive, and vision make her perfect for the viva bella team!

1. When you aren’t working with viva bella, how do you spend your free time?

Well if I had three hours to live, I would spend one of them on the tennis court! It is one of my favorite things to do. I’m relatively new to the sport so I love that I’m getting a great workout, time with friends, learning something new, AND it is an outlet for my competitive nature! Oh yes, and I have a family and I actually like them better than tennis. :) My husband Lou and I have a great six year old daughter. She is hilarious, smart and kind so we try to spend as much of our free time with her as possible! He’s pretty wonderful himself.

2. What is the best piece of advice you wish you could give all brides?

I’m bummed that Steven got his blog answers back to you earlier than I did as he stole my answer. Nothing is more important than remembering this is really about a marriage. The wedding is just the huge celebration that marks the beginning of something way bigger and way better than even the best Viva Bella Event (and that is pretty darn good). I think keeping that in mind while planning helps keep everyone from sweating the small stuff.

3. Do you have any pets and/or children?

I do, I have my six year old Grace, and two older step children, Louie and Brigida. My dog Bennett is hands down the cutest of the bunch!

4. What is your favorite sports team, food, or restaurant?

I LOVE La Poste in Clifton, when I go I order whatever the fish special is for the night, and I am NEVER disappointed. I’m also a huge fan of Otto’s in Northern Kentucky.

5. What is the hardest part of your job? Keeping track of all the crazy details! Each wedding has so many minute details and the last thing you can do is drop the ball on such an important day. I find that stressful! Being super organized isn’t an option, it is a necessity!

6. Favorite Graeter’s Ice Cream flavor?

Yikes, just one? Strawberry Chip, it is a specialty flavor. If you let me take up more room because I don’t really get into team sports. I’d say that Coconut Chip isn’t so bad either. Or Lemon Ice..… Did I mention that I think ice cream is really delicious?

7. Lipstick or Lipgloss?

Lipgloss for sure! I usually blend two to get just the right color and texture. Nothing is simple with me.

8. If you were to do it all over again, what is the one thing that would be a MUST at your own wedding?

Well, we got married on top of a mountain in ski season so that is a tough question as it was pretty darn amazing! It was a spectacular spring day, with the man I love and loved every minute. (Ok, if I HAD to change one thing it would be my hair, the cut and color could use a little help) I do think that we will renew our vows and throw another wedding/party, but I’m really worried because now that I am aware of the endless possibilities, I think it will cost a FORTUNE! I want it all! Amazing linens, a fantastic band, super cool bar and lounge area. I think it would be so fun to go over the top to create an experience to thank friends and family that have made such a difference in our lives.

9. What is your favorite part of working with viva bella?

When people find out what I do, most people ask me if the brides are the worst part of my job. Let’s just say the term “Bridezilla” comes up more often than I expected! The truth is, I think they are the best part! It is wonderful getting to know and hang out with someone during one of the most exciting times of their lives. I think overwhelmingly they are super appreciative of the fact that they are being helped and supported. At the end of the day, we are truly trying to take as much of the stress off of their back as we possibly can. Maybe they are relaxed and that is why they are so nice to work with! :)

Pride & Prejudice “Midnight Tea”

“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of good fortune, must be in want of a wife.”

I just love this first line!  These days we could say “it is a truth universally acknowledged that a beautiful wedding shoot must be shared and enjoyed by all!”  Today, the Wedding Chicks have published our imaginative Pride & Prejudice Styled wedding shoot.  Take a look!

Jane Austen’s beloved 18th century novel takes us though 61 chapters of angst, conversational jousting, social discordance, unrequited love and finally, the “single man” gets the girl!

Lovers of  Austen’s characters Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy can only dream of what the next chapters would hold.  Obviously,  Mr. Darcy would have spared no expense for his new bride’s wedding celebration and one thing we know for sure is Elizabeth “was very anxious to keep him for herself.”  (ch 60) Don’t all brides want that?

For this charmingly modern Pride & Prejudice styled shoot, we envisioned…”Midnight Tea” for the gallant Mr. Darcy and the fine Elizabeth Bennett.

“I have been meditating on the very great pleasure which a pair of fine eyes in the face of a pretty woman can bestow.” (ch 6)

Throughout the novel, Austen weaves a story of social contrast, of what is and is not customary in society.  Mr. Darcy’s proposal is shocking to many, including Elizabeth, so we designed high tea, après the wedding festivities, with a striking contrast of old & new, formal & informal, delicate & bold.

Setting the tone for our fresh twist on high tea is the cool blue, yet romantic, lighting accents.  We wanted the room to feel more “hip club” than “stuffy country club”.

One of our favorite elements of  “Midnight Tea” is the stationery designs, capturing the formality of the era, with contrasting touches on the invitations, menu, and escort cards, like classic black silhouettes and modern rhinestone embellishments.  Staying with our high tea theme, sugar cubes are used to hold each escort card placed on a worn chessboard.

Rich linens with deep teal and black were chosen to reflect the luxurious textiles of the era and set the stage for our bold jewel toned color scheme.  Each swag of the table linen is adorned with a vintage brooch and classic cameos accent each dinner napkin.  Delicately feminine ruffled chair skirts in bold colors and textures strike just the right balance for the dinner table.

Because I am obsessed with chairs, especially Chameleon Chairs, I just had to add in these close-ups!

Elizabeth’s brooch bouquet features vintage heirloom brooches with a dupioni silk, satin, and organza stem treatment.

Hanging teacups and cameos above the “Midnight Tea” dessert table, look lovely and delicate in the cool blue lighting; hanging from above, they are a playful turn on tradition.  The gems and pearls overflowing from candy dishes are meant to reflect opulence and finery of the time.

Set in a grand vintage silver vase, the bold rich hues of the hydrangea, roses, cabbage, eucalyptus and other organic elements looks as though they were harvested from the beautiful grounds at Pemberly.  More vintage table wear overflowing with fruit, flowers, sugar and jewels reflect prosperity and opulence.

The “Midnight Tea” whimsical wedding cake is embellished with black lace, jewel toned satin, pleated ribbons, reminiscent of late 18th century fashion.  Gorgeously handcrafted sugar flowers affix the wedding cake and each guests’ tea time treat.

“I cannot fix on the hour, or the spot, or the look, or the words, which laid foundation.  It is too long ago.  I was in the middle before I knew that I had begun (to fall in love with Elizabeth).” (Ch 60)

BEHIND THE SCENES

We had such fun on this shoot!  The best part was conceptualizing an idea that we all loved and seeing it come to life.  Working with friends, who just happen to be very talented vendors, is a real treat!

Royal Influence

This time last year were you recuperating from being up all night viewing and reviewing of the biggest wedding of the decade?  We were!  We couldn’t get enough of the royal wedding!  At the time, we knew we were watching history, but…wow, the influence this wedding has had on wedding style and bridal fashion this past year is mind-blowing!

The Knot claims that the wedding of the decade, “has made a very distinct mark on how brides are deciding on style”; and, Colin Cowie says the “Royal Wedding will herald a traditional wedding renaissance.”

We’ve collected a few of our favorite and most influential elements of last year’s royal wedding…enjoy!

Lady-like & Lace

We have to start with Kate’s dress, of course.  Lace, lace and more lace.  “Designers at all price points have debuted collections featuring full frothy skirts, wildflowers and lace used in both traditional and modern ways,” says Kate Campbell, department chair of Fashion & Retail Management at The Art Institute of Tampa, a branch of Miami International University of Art & Design. “This particular trend parallels the more feminine, elegant trends we see in fashion everywhere – including more fitted and ladylike styles reminiscent of Grace Kelly and Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy.”

Kate’s Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen gown has turned long sleeves and lace into the must-have fashion-forward bridal look of 2012 & 2013! Some of our favorites…

Monique Lhuillier, Spring 2013

Pricilla of Boston, Spring 2012

The Pippa Effect

Undoubtedly, little sis, Pippa Middleton, made such a splash in her gorgeous sleek white cowl-neck dress that designers took notice.  We love the influence her bridesmaid dress turned wedding gown has had on bridal fashion this past year.

Also, Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, Pippa’s dress was beautiful and flattering, perfect for a modern, elegant bride.  The Christos below is definitely a cowl-neck favorite!

Badgley Mischka, Fall 2012

Christos, Fall 2012

Kate’s Reception Dress

(So many dresses to talk about!!!) Again, this dress could have been Kate’s bridal gown.  We just love the belted ball gown with sweet heart neckline.  Many brides are opting for simple sophistication with a touch of bling!

Traditional Veils

As we recently saw from New York Bridal Week, longer veils are making a come back.  Fingertip and waltz lengths are particularly popular. Intricately detailed to make a statement, longer traditional veils add classic romance.

We absolutely adore these two gorgeous Romona Keveza looks from the Spring 2012 & Spring 2013 Collections.

Romantic Flowers

Kate’s beautifully arranged bouquet draws on the traditions of flowers of significance for the Royal Family, the Middleton family and on the Language of Flowers. “As a nod to her new husband, Middleton included ‘sweet William’ blooms. Keeping with royal tradition, stems from a myrtle planted by Queen Victoria in 1845 were also added” according to a statement by the Official Royal Wedding website.

Artfully structured smaller bouquets are made to look “gathered” and unstructured.  This romantic wildflower look and choosing flowers with significant meaning to the bride and groom are floral trends that are here to stay.  We found both of these beautiful examples on Pinterest…

The Tree-lined aisle!

We are still enchanted by the oak trees from Windsor Great Park and other royal estates that lined the aisle of Westminster Abbey.  Shane Connolly, the floral artistic director for the wedding brought in eight 20ft maple trees lining the aisle for royal wow-factor!

More examples of bringing nature indoors for a truly romantic feel…

On Golden Pond

Well, one of my favorite times of years is coming up… my wedding anniversary! This year is a big one– TEN years! I love anniversaries so much because it’s a special time for Stevie and I to get away and reflect on our marriage. We have created anniversary traditions that have come to mean so much to us.  Here are a few…

We always go away for at least one night…always, always. This becomes increasingly harder with kids, but we certainly believe it is worth the time to be alone!

We always re-read our wedding vows to each other each anniversary to remind each other of the commitments we to made to God and each other.

We always watch “On Golden Pond”. We just love this sweet, romantic movie. It’s about all the complications that come with being a family, but the center of the story rests in the long, abiding relationship between Ethyl and Norman. We look forward to having such a long history with each other — but we want to be surrounded by LOTS of grandchildren! Anyway, it’s a rare movie that celebrates growing old together, which is an idea we really cherish.  Please, tell me you’ve seen it!  If you haven’t, I guarantee you will love it, too!

We always add to our Family Journal: We began a journal on our honeymoon and we love re-reading it together. Every year we write one page reflecting on the past year’s major events (this year we had our second baby, for instance!) and another page for writing out goals for our marriage. We read last year’s goals and share how we’ve seen each other grow. One of my favorite things we write about is at least one new thing we learned about the other– yes, we believe that, on our 50th wedding anniversary, we’ll still be learning new things about each other! Our hope is that our journal will be a treasured gift for our children, so we address all entries to them. We want them to know the story of their family, so we’re writing it as we go!

We are leaving today to visit Boston, New Hampshire and Rhode Island; and, I’m most excited about our stop at On Golden Pond–actually, it’s called Squam Lake, but it’s where “our” movie was filmed! We’re leaving our girls for four long nights! Don’t get me wrong—I’m excited to getaway, but my heart will start to long for my babies after only that first night!

Do you have anniversary traditions? I’d love to know in the comment section below! If you don’t have any, why not start this year? It is never too late to invest time and energy into your marriage!

New York Bridal Week 2012!

Are you like us?  We can look at bridal gowns all day long!  This past week New York hosted 2012 Bridal Week, showcasing designers’ Spring 2013 looks.  The images surfacing from the runways are stunning!

Looks ranged from sleek and sexy sheaths to frilly ball gowns.  The emerging trends are definitely leaning toward modern peplums and romantic lace.  Like we saw last fall, Vera Wang went against convention and showed spectacular bold color.  Ines de Santo’s designs are works of art with amazing voluminous texture!  Modern Trousseau brought beautiful soft nude hues to gowns and accents.  Known for her modern simplicity, Carolina Herrera wowed the crowd with beautifully structured bows and peplums.  Longer veils, specifically fingertip and waltz lengths, are making their way on to the scene again with Romona Keveza’s visions.

Below is a few of our favorite looks from the Spring 2013 collections.  Enjoy!
